II. Jewish Heritage in Belarus

Itinerary: Minsk – Mir – Novogrudok – Brest – Pinsk – Stolin – Slutsk

Duration: 7 days/ 6 nights

DAY 1

Arrival in Minsk. Meeting at the airport.

Transfer to the hotel. Check-in.

DAY 2

 Breakfast.

Sightseeing tour of Minsk incl. architectural and cultural monuments of the 17th –18th cents., historic part of the city – the Trinity Suburb.

City tour of Jewish Minsk incl. the memorial complex “Yama”, Minsk Synagogue, Rakovsky Suburb (Minsk ghetto), the menorial complex “Trostenets”.

Free time.

DAY 3

Breakfast.

Departure for BREST via MIR and NOVOGRUDOK.

Sightseeing tour of Mir  incl a world-known yeshiva which was established in 1815 and numbered about five hundred students from around the world, four synagogues, the Old Jewish cemetery, an impressive memorial complex erected to commemorate the Jewish families murdered in WWII. Visit to the medieval Dukes’ Radziwill castle of Mir built in 1495. The castle of Mir offers a unique example of architecture of that period, Belarusian Gothic. Today it has features of Gothic, Renaissance, defensive and palace architecture.

Novogrudok  was the center of the Great Duchy of Lithuania. Nowadays you could find the ruins of the ancient castle and a lot of churches and monasteries. This is the town of the famous poet Adam Mitskevich (his mother came from the family of christened Jews).You could visit the museum of Local Lore which is a nice places to visit and to know  more of the Jewish community. Visit to the area of the Jewish ghetto and the places of the mass murder.

DAY 4

BREST city tour.

Brest used to be the main Jewish city of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during XIV – XVII centuries. By the end of the XIX century Jewish community accounted for more then 65% of the total population of Brest.

Brest is the birthplace of the Prime-Minister of the State of Israel Menachem Begin and famous rabbi and Talmudic scholar Chaim Soloveitchik.

Brest city tour includes visits to the Brest fortress, famous for its prolonged defense against Nazis in 1941, several former ghettos and other sights.

Departure for PINSK.

Pinsk is the old Belarusian town founded in 1097. The town used to have many schools where subjects were taught in Yiddish and Hebrew. Pinsk is a native land of M.Kol, I.Naidin, G.Galperin, S. Roenbaum.

DAY 5

Breakfast.

PINSK city tour. The city tour includes: Jewish Community Center, Hassidic functioning Synagogue, Old Jewish cemetery, the site of execution of Jews, the Jesuit College (17th c.), Catholic Church (16th-17th c.), Franciscan Monastery (16th-17th c.), visiting places connected with Khaim Weizman – the scientist and Zionist leader, the first President of Israel (1948-1952), he was born in the neighboring village of Motol and got education in Pinsk; Golda Meir – the first Prime-Minister of Israel (1969-1974), lived in Pinsk. Visit to the Synagogue, meeting with Pinsk Jewish Community.

Overnight in Pinsk.

DAY 6

Breakfast.

Departure for STOLIN – the center of Carlin-Stolin Hasids. Short tour of the town including the places of Jewish Heritage.

Departure for SLUTSK. A short excursion around Slutsk visiting the Jewish places and the Historical Museum where one can see famous Slutsk Belts, one of the symbols of Belarusian folk culture.

Departure for Minsk.
