Holy Assumption Church

Holy Assumption Church

Holy Assumption Church is the largest Orthodox church in Vitebsk. Archeologists assume that before the church appeared, there was a pagan temple of the Slavic goddess Makosha, the patroness of the feminine and fertility.

The first mentions about this place, connected with an Orthodox church date back to 1406 and were also surrounded by various legends, for example, as early as the 19th century, people were rumored that an underground passage was taking place from the Church under Western Dvina.
