The Island of tears

The Island of tears in Minsk is a memorial complex, that is also called the Island of courage and grief.

Built on the bend of the Svisloch River, next to the Trinity suburb, this memorial is a tribute to the memory of Belarusian soldiers-internationalists who participated in the war with Afghanistan (about 30,000), as well as the monument to the sons and daughters of Belarus who fell in the battles of all time.

The complex consists of:

  • «To the Sons of the Fatherland Who Perished Outside Its Borders» Monument;
  • Boulder with a bronze icon of the Mother of God and text explaining the theme of the monument and was installed on the island in 1988;
  • Figure of a crying guardian angel;
  • Boulders with the names of the Afghan provinces, where the Soviet troops were fighting.
